Recent developments in AI and neuroscience have reignited the dream of immortality - not in a physical but a digital sense. Specifically it is now possible to create an avatar of a deceased person based on pictures, video, sound recordings and texts and bring this avatar to life in order to have a conversation. Work is also going on to create neural interfaces that would allow the up and downloading of neural activities between living brains and digital devices. Foreseeing and Inspired by these developments, I revisited together with neuroscientist Oscar Vilarroya, the centuries old myth of Faust in order to create a new opera that explores the ramifications of these developments. In this presentation I will outline the plot of the opera, shows some clips of key scenes, and comment on the profound changes that digital immortality brings in our relation to death. Fausto had performances at the Gaite Lyrique in Paris in 2016, the La Monnaie Foyer in 2017, the And&Mind Gate festival in Leuven in 2017, and at the La Monnaie main opera hall in Brussels, 2018.
