The Casa de Mateus Library is the visible part of a bibliographic fund and archive that contains memories dating back to at least the 15th century.
From the Greek poets to the great religious works, such as Mystica Ciudad de Dios, the bedside book of the Santo Arcediago, from the classical architecture seen by Piranesi to António Franco's Promptuario de syntaxe, belonging to D. Leonor de Portugal, the more than six thousand titles that make up its bibliographical collection reveal the family's relationship with the university and ecclesiastical milieus, the two great sources of knowledge at the time.
This is also the setting for an extraordinary publishing adventure. Its protagonist is D. José Maria, the 5th Morgado de Mateus, a mathematician trained at the University of Coimbra, military man and diplomat. His endeavour is the Monumental Edition of Os Lusíadas, by Luís de Camões.
