AnneMarie Maes (BE) is an artist and researcher with an extensive track record of socially engaged artistic projects aimed at raising awareness of the fragility of our natural environment and adopting strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.
He has worked extensively with communities on urban agriculture, the creation of interconnected urban green corridors and the installation and monitoring of innovative beehives. This work has been translated into documentaries, participatory artworks and installations. In parallel, Anne Marie Maes has been exploring the living world to create new aesthetics and innovative materials, such as fabrics based on bacteria, algae and plants. This work has given rise to a wide range of artworks and installations exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums. A third strand of Maes' artistic practice centres on digital technologies. With her artistic collective, she pioneered a series of innovations in the 1990s for peer-to-peer telecommunications networks, web content creation and environmental monitoring.
In the 2000s, she worked with AI researchers and robotics engineers to incorporate intelligence into her bee-related installations and, more recently, she has been exploring augmented reality and semantic web technologies to raise awareness of the fragile ecologies of the North Sea.
